The abbreviation “TMJ” is often used to connote TMJ disorder, also known as TMD. This occurs when the jaw becomes stressed, injured, or misaligned, and can be the result of many different factors. These factors can include; stress, teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism), arthritis affecting the TMJ, or trauma and injury to the jaw, neck, or head.
